That marriage is an outdated, archaic system with no sanctity whatsoever, is there for all to see. The only reason it works probably is to legalize the status of the child born of the relationship. The day society gives legal sanction to children born out of wedlock, the institution of marriage with cease to exist.
What is most painful however, is the degradation and utter abasement of relationships that more often than not start off with religious sanction and the blessings of family and well wishers. But when the relationship breaks - whether it a 35 year old relationship or a 3 year old one - nothing can stop the muck from flying around. There really is no such thing like a clean divorce...
